C-DAC to develop India Gateway project

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), is working on an innovative India Development Gateway project that seeks to help rural areas and in social development.

The gateway to be developed by C-DAC, Hyderabad is aimed at catalysing the use of information and communication technology for collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders representing Government, non-government organisations and academic, research institutions, civil society and private sector.

The objective of this project is to provide responsiveness and credible information on products and services in local languages catering to the needs of rural communities.

SECTORS COVERED

The project would seek to encompass five broad areas of agriculture, health care, rural energy, primary education and e-governance. It is set to become operational early next year. Initially, the portal will be launched in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and later n eight other Indian languages.

The project combines well with e-learning initiatives and tools such as e-learning management system (e-Sikshak), Vartalaap (a virtual classroom), and Ecko (a content management system) among other tools.

As a part of this initiative, C-DAC here organised a one-day workshop on e-learning for non-governmental organisations.

The Unicef Representative for Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Mr Michel Saint-Lot, complimented the Government initiative in introducing e-learning programmes in rural areas for NGOs.

The Centre Head, C-DAC, Hyderabad, Mr S.R.S. Prasad, said the gateway project would deliver basics of e-learning and facilitate better interface.
