Strategy States - West Bengal A prize worth its weight in silver Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 12 Many prize schemes are announced by retail brands during festive occasions, especially in the FMCG segment, but the average citizen remains largely sceptical as no big-ticket prize winner ever emerges in the public domain. Kolkata, which has now emerged as a major retail hub for items like mid-price footwear, today witnessed a twist in the tale - a real winner from suburban Bengal who walked a way with a hefty prize - all 70 kilos of silver, a prize worth his body weight, from Sreeleathers, a city-based popular leather shoes and accessories outfit. Silver converted into cash coming to Rs 13.5 lakh was handed over by the company officials to the winner at a glittering ceremony. The gift scheme was based on net purchases worth Rs 700 or more during the last Durga Puja festivities. Mr Sandip Chatterjee of Behrampur in North Bengal, who collected a gift voucher from Sreeleathers' mid-town footwear showroom in September last after purchases of Rs 700 won the big prize in a lottery conducted three weeks ago. While the per kg price of silver was based on the rate prevailing on the date of winning the prize, Mr Chatterjee's weight on Tuesday was taken into account for the final payout. "I tried my best, but could not tip the scales at over 70 kilos today", said a beaming Chatterjee. Talking to Business Line, Mr S.B. Dey, Partner, Sreeleathers, said the big prize - Heavyweight Offer - was the company's way of paying back its loyal customers. He said the customers' response to the Gift Scheme, going by the number of entries received, was quite overwhelming. Two Maruti Alto cars were also handed over today to two other winners of the second prize at the company's 30,000 sq ft showroom on Free School Street in Central Kolkata.
