Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union has come out with a Rs 50-lakh proposal to produce flavoured milk. Proposal to be placed before Cabinet soon

Mangalore , Dec. 12

The Karnataka Government is contemplating to introduce milk as a part in the mid-day meal scheme for school children, according to the Minister for Fisheries and Religious Endowment, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty.

Inaugurating a painting competition for school children — organised by the Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Ltd here on Tuesday — Mr Shetty said that though there were proposals to introduce egg in the mid-day meal scheme for school children, some students were averse to use egg in their meal.

Keeping this in mind, there is a plan to introduce milk in the mid-day meal scheme. This proposal will be placed before the Cabinet soon.

He hoped that the proposal might get favourable response.

Union procurement

Mr K. Divakar Shetty, President of Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Ltd, said that the union purchases milk at Rs 10.27 a litre from farmers.

He said that 563 milk producers' cooperative societies and 87,000 farmers are part of the union.

At present, the union procures around 2.12 lakh litres of milk a day from farmers and distributes 1.9 lakh litres a day to consumers.

Flavoured milk

Welcoming the gathering, Dr A.M. Shivakumar, Managing Director of the union, said that the union has come out with a Rs 50-lakh proposal to produce flavoured milk.

Mr M. Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, said that the cooperative sector should get ready to face the challenges in the world.

It is necessary for them to incorporate technological changes, he added.
