The Council for Leather Exports has said that to meet the huge demand for raw material from the leather sector, the industry would have to consider "strategic sourcing" of skins and hides from abroad.
The Council's Chairman, Mr Rafeeque Ahmed, said this while speaking on the occasion of the visit of the President of Botswana, Mr Festus Mogae, to Chennai.
Mr Ahmed said that the global leather trade was worth about $100 billion (Rs 4.5 lakh crore). India intends to raise its exports from $2.7 billion now to $7 billion by 2010-11.
"To meet such targets, production of leather needs to be doubled from two billion sq. ft now," Mr Ahmed said.
Ninety per cent of India's production, which is about a tenth of global production, is out of indigenous raw material.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mogae said Botswana was keen on India's investment and know-how in his country's fledgling leather industry.
The CLE and the Botswana Export Development & Investment Authority signed a MoU to co-operate in the leather sector.
It was noted that Botswana has a 3-lakh-strong cattle population. "The leather industry in our country foresees possibilities of mutual co-operation between the two countries. India will share knowledge and expertise to support the development of leather industry in Botswana," Mr Ahmed said.
