Plastics less than 50-microthin thickness to be banned

Differences still persist over the conditions put forward by ADB as part of the loan agreement for fast-track development of 5 municipalities.

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 13

The Kerala Government has decided to ban use of plastic bags, bottles and cups of less than 50-micron thickness in the State.

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the decision had been taken in view of the serious environmental problems posed by the widespread use of plastic materials. The ban would come into force with immediate effect.

The Chief Minister said that district collectors and other officials concerned would be given necessary instructions to enforce the ban. He also appealed to the public to cooperate with the Government.

ADB loan

The Chief Minister said that he would examine the loan agreement signed by the Government with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the fast-track development of five municipalities in the State. He said that differences still persisted in respect of the conditions put forward by the bank as part of the loan agreement.

The Home Minister, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said that the Cabinet had decided to bring in an "anti-social activities prevention" Ordinance to deal with issues such a video piracy, fake currency notes, trafficking in women and drugs, and money-lenders charging high interest rates.
