FARMERS LET WATER into a paddy field near Thrissur. With the water requirement for traditional rice crop being 5,000 litres for a kg of grain, thrice the quantity to maize and wheat, sustainability of irrigated rice production in the country is under threat as water is fast becoming scarce. Development of aerobic rice, a concept aimed at decreasing water requirement in rice production by late planting or sowing or special breeding programme may help overcome the issue.
