Hyderabad , Dec. 13

Photonics will play an important role in development of medical, sensing, telecommunications and Defence technologies, said experts participating in Photonics 2006, a four-day international conference that began today.

The conference is a joint effort of academia, industry and Defence R&D.

It is being organised jointly by University of Hyderabad, RCI (Research Centre Imarat), a Defence organisation, and Optiwave Photonics Ltd, an industrial enterprise.

About 600 delegates, including 120 foreign delegates from the US, Russia, the UK, Australia, Poland, Italy, Iran, Israel and other nations, are taking part in the meet.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr Seyed E. Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor of Hyderabad University, said that the theme of the conference - `Fibre Optics, Optoelectronics and Photonics' - shows the recognition and growing importance of developing a healthy bond between academia and industry.

He said that photonics was impacting every walk of our life - communication, signal processing, imaging, biology, medical applications, fundamental science, industrial applications, holography, entertainment, etc.

There is a clear indication that research in photonics and industry applications have come to stay and the collaboration between the two will be mutually beneficial.

During the four days, professors, scholars and professionals in industry - both from India and abroad - will present papers.
