The agenda Safal plans to launch an national exchange to provide online trading of perishables. The market would provide market feedback on problems encountered in the previous season to enable growers take corrective steps.
Coimbatore , Dec. 13 Safal fruits and vegetable auction market from Bangalore, which provides organised marketing for growers of horticultural products, has expressed keenness to procure higher volume of mangoes from the Tamil Nadu for 2007 season. Safal is a unit of the Delhi-based Mother Dairy. Safal's head (backward linkages), Dr Omveer Singh, has agreed to place an indent to buy 6,000 tonnes of `Thothapuri' variety and another 1,000 tonnes of `Alphonso' variety during 2007 for producing mango pulp.
Interactive meet
This was revealed at an interactive meeting held in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here on Tuesday chaired by the University Vice-Chancellor, Dr C. Ramasamy. Those who took part in the meeting include Mr V.C. Soundarajan, President and Mr D.H. Malani, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Mango Growers Federation and former State Minister and member of the Erode district mango growers association, Mr N.K.K. Periyasamy. Last year, the State Federation had supplied about 2,500 tonnes of mangoes to Safal. While federation members have assured quality supplies to Safal, they have also requested additional facilities from Safal in improved market assistance such as higher collection centres, enhanced support for transport of mangoes to the processing centres over and above the agreed prices, market information on prices for other commodities including mangoes, better grading and sorting terminals having computer facilities, according to a communication from the TNAU.
National exchange
The communication said that Safal plans to launch a national exchange to provide online trading of perishables. Besides agreeing to discuss with the State Mango Growers Federation on pricing for the coming season, the Safal auction market officials also informed the growers about banned pesticides adopted in different countries that import fruits and pulps. The Safal market would provide market feedback on problems encountered in the previous season so as to enable growers take corrective steps.
