Nationwide strike today

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 13

The central trade unions, including AITUC, CITU, AICCTU, HMS and others, would observe a nationwide strike on Thursday. The participants also include various independent sector-specific trade union federations, while INTUC has opted to remain out of the entire exercise.

The TUs have made a 16-point charter of demand seeking change in the Government's present policy directions, which the Left parties have termed as anti-poor.

Demands

The main demand made by the workers' bodies are taking swift measures to check price rise and strengthen the public distribution system; introduce the comprehensive legislation for the unorganised sector workers and for agricultural workers; remove ban on recruitment and stop contract system of employment and outsourcing jobs.

The demands also include measure to stop raising foreign direct investment in telecom sector, no FDI in defence sector and not raising the existing FDI caps in banking and insurance sectors, no FDI in coal, retail and pension sectors.

To protect workers' interests the unions are also urging the Government to stop cutting interest rates on all provident funds and small savings.

The banking and insurance sectors are also joining the strike.

According to the General Secretary of the AITUC and CPI leader, Mr Gurudas Dasgupta, "Our basis for agitation is against the economic policies of the Government, which are anti-poor. If the Government doesn't change its policies the protests would be further intensified."
