HBO lines up blockbusters to sustain growth

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 13

HBO is confident of continuing its growth of 15 to 20 per cent in 2007 with a line up of blockbusters to be premiered on television next year.

"The number one position is not etched in stone," said Ms Shruti Bajpai, Country Manager, HBO South Asia, adding that although leadership status would continue to swing back and forth between HBO and Star Movies, with a bagful of blockbusters in their kitty, 2007 promises to be a good year.

Starting with one of the biggest movies of recent times King Kong premiering in January, HBO will follow it by running Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman Begins and a host of others, including The Da Vinci Code and MI-3.

Strategy

The strategy, says Ms Bajpai, will be `bigger and better' and with its association with Sony, Paramount, Universal and Warner Brother studios, HBO has a line up of 52 exclusive premiers.

The channel will also increase the number of HBO Original Mini Series shown here. "The audience is an increasingly discerning one that appreciates the high quality, thought provoking content of these programmes," says Ms Bajpai. The channel will also rerun their popular show Sex and the City.

Back on air

Since being blacked out in Mumbai for allegedly showing adult content, the channel is now back on air and making sure it has all its movies cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification and screening only U and U/A rated movies.

HBO also announced the Asia premier of its new original two-part mini series, Tsunami, The Aftermath, based on the tsunami of 2004, to be shown on the December 26.

HBO Original Mini series has always managed to draw the biggest names of entertainment, be it Tom Hanks as producer for the Band of Brothers or Angelina Jolie as actress, said Ms Bajpai.

The channel will not sell any commercials spots during the screening of Tsunami, The Aftermath as their small tribute to tsunami victims.
