Joint study on human development

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 14

A group of researchers from Canada, Cuba and Kerala have launched a study to determine whether any lessons can be learnt from the high levels of human development achieved by Kerala and Cuba.

Despite their differences, Kerala and Cuba share many similarities in terms of their high human development indicators, said Dr Joseph Tharamangalam of Halifax University, Canada, who is the project's principal investigator.

Addressing a press conference in the city today, he added that both regions have achieved these advances in human development and public mobilisation against the background of historically low levels of economic growth.

LESSONS

The study, titled `Lessons in human development: A comparative study on Kerala and Cuba', will endeavour to determine whether Kerala's and Cuba's development experience have any lessons to offer other developing regions of the world, Dr Tharamangalam said.

The study will also examine how these development models can be sustained and will also help Cuba and Kerala learn from each other, he added.

Supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the study will be completed in three years.

Over the past few days, the research team has held consultations with various experts in Kerala on the contours of the study, said Dr M.A. Oommen of the Institute of Social Sciences, and one of the co-investigators of the study. Other members of the research team, including Dr Beatriz Diaz of Havana University, also participated in the press conference.
