Kolkata , Dec. 14

Normal banking operations in West Bengal remained paralysed on Thursday as nearly 75,000 employees in about 5,500 branches in the State stayed away from work, responding to a 24-hour strike called by the CITU and other central trade unions in support of their various demands.

The local offices of the Reserve Bank of India, including the clearing operations, remained closed.

Mr S. Bardhan, General Secretary of Bank Employees Federation of India, in a statement, congratulated the bank employees for responding to the strike whole-heartedly.

"The success vindicates the demands raised in support of the strike," Mr Bardhan observed.

Mr Rajan Nagar, President of All India Bank Employees Association and General Secretary of Bengal Porvincial Bank Employees Association, in a statement, urged the Union Government to reconsider its policies in view of the tremendous success of the strike in the financial sector all over the country.

Mr Samir Ghosh, General Secretary of All India Reserve Bank Employees Association, said the strike was successful in the offices of the RBI all over the country, except in the Mumbai office.

The Thursday's strike was not only in support of 16-point demands raised by the central trade unions but also in protest against the RBI's decision to outsource many of its operations and downsize the workforce.

Mr Rana Mitra, Vice-President of All-India Nabard Employees Association, in a statement, said the strike was total in all Nabard offices across the country.
