The southern region exported engineering goods worth Rs 15,994 crore during 2005-06 compared with Rs 12,825 crore during 2004-05 — a 24.70 per cent growth. India's export of engineering goods in 2005-06 was $20,457 million and of this the share of southern region was 17 per cent at $3,477 million, according to Mr B. Chandrasekharan, Regional Chairman, Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC).

In the southern region, Tamil Nadu topped the exports during 2005-06 contributing nearly 65 per cent of Rs 15,994 crore, followed by Karnataka with 21 per cent and Andhra Pradesh with 14 per cent, he said at the EEPC Regional Awards for Export Excellence (Southern Region) for 2004-05.

Major items exported from the south include passenger cars, commercial vehicles, industrial castings, automobile spare parts and accessories, Mr Chandrasekharan said.

Ashok Leyland bagged the gold trophy for the top exporter in the large enterprise category, Autotech Industries in the medium enterprise category and Mohan Mutha Exports in the small enterprise sector.
