Wants the State to promote integrated cotton farming on contract farming basis.
Plea to create a directorate of cotton development.
Requests the Union Govt to create an exclusive mission directorate for promotion of ELS cotton.

Hyderabad , Dec. 15

The Southern India Mills' Association (SIMA) has asked Andhra Pradesh, one of the leading cotton producing States in the country, to create an AP Cotton brand on the lines of Gujarat's Shankar 6.

It also wanted the State to promote integrated cotton farming on contract farming basis for effective transfer of technology and tie-up between production and consumption.

A detailed roadmap, prepared by the association for "accelerating cotton production and improving the quality in Andhra Pradesh," felt that the brand equity could help increase value of exports.

The association wanted the State to create a directorate of cotton development to ensure effective coordination and implementation of research and development programmes by various agencies.

Referring to the projected cotton production of 440 lakh bales by 2012, it said the share of Andhra Pradesh in that could be 70 lakh bales. The State produced 33 lakh bales last year.

Asking the Government to monitor the quality of seed distributed to farmers, SIMA gave do's and don'ts to prevent contamination of cotton at the farm level and in the ginning factories.

At an interactive session held here Mr S.V. Arumugam, President of SIMA, wanted the State to set a target to produce 2.5 lakh extra long staple (ELS) variety.

He said the association had appealed to the Union Government to create an exclusive mission directorate for promotion of ELS cotton with an initial budgetary allocation of Rs 50 crore.
