Hyderabad tops in growth rate in country

Hyderabad , Dec. 15

Automobile manufacturers, especially the one's selling passenger cars, must be a happy lot in Andhra Pradesh. The segment seems to be on a roll, going by the sales logged in the first six months of the financial year 2006-07.

The State capital, which registered the highest growth rate in the country in October, accounts for nearly 70 per cent of the total sales. According to industry information, the total passenger car sales in the State during April-October 2006 were 43,515.

Hyderabad alone accounted for the sale of a whopping 31,854 cars. Interestingly, 74 Mercedes Benz, the luxury class cars were also bought in the city.

However, the other major cities such as Visakhapatnam (10 per cent) and Vijayawada (6 per cent), did not measure up to the boom witnessed in Hyderabad.

BOOM SECTORS

The flourishing IT, pharma sectors are not just fuelling the real estate boom in and around Hyderabad, but also boosting the sales of passenger cars, say automobile industry sources.

To substantiate, they point out that institutional sale, dominated by the corporates (again IT and pharma), and Government account for 30 per cent of all sales here.

The State has all the major carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, GM, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Fiat, Skoda, HM and Benz present in the market.

Another interesting trend observed was the dense sales in the segment occupied by Tata Indica, Santro, Wagon R, Swift, Getz and so on, which account for 67 per cent of all the cars sold.

Maruti Suzuki, the leader has a marketshare of up to 40 per cent in the State. It logged a sale of 16,335 cars during the period, with Hyderabad accounting for 11,310 of these, sources said.
