Tata Research sees good scope in data privacy tools

Our Bureau

Pune , Dec. 15

After completing 25 years of innovation, the Tata Research Development and Design Centre (TRDDC), would have a key role in the enterprise wide innovation programme, TCS Innovation 2.0, initiated by Tata Consultancy Services this year.

It would also focus on two areas — software engineering and process engineering, Prof. Mathai Joseph, Executive Director, TRDDC, said.

He said data masking is in the forefront and research on data privacy has already led to the release of the first data privacy tool developed in India, the Masketeer. He said three pilot projects were carried out in the financial services sector before its release for use by third parties. He pointed out that data masking tools had applications in the financial services, healthcare and public information areas.

Prof Mathai said research had commenced on version 2.0 of the tools using the new techniques that would ensure enhanced privacy of individual data while also permitting its use in controlled applications. He said TRDDC has a collaboration with Stanford University for this. He said it is also working on techniques for managing the complexity of large IT systems — typically with more than a lakh desktops, about 1,000 servers and other inter-linked communication and storage resources. These techniques have also found commercial applications, he said while noting that loads for some applications had been reduced by as much as 60 per cent. He said these applications also cater to the financial services.

Looking at other new areas, he said fraud detection and information extracting tools are also in the fray.

He said TRDDC is working on extracting information from very large text databases to help identify major trends and problems from seemingly unconnected data.

New techniques using algorithms are being developed to identify patterns in such text and to make them available for later use.
