`Cut distance between power supply points'

Tamil Nadu has to lay emphasis on achieving higher energy efficiency. The strategy for this should include enhancement of feedstock availability for thermal power projects, maintaining the hydel-thermal power ratio and lowering the distance between two distribution points, according to Mr P. Murari, former bureaucrat and adviser to the President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
Participating at an interactive session organised by the FICCI with the industry members here on Thursday, Mr Murari said distribution of power held key in the electricity business and it would tell upon the quality of power the consumer gets, irrespective of how much was generated.
To achieve the desired power quality, the State electricity board should strive to bring down the distance between two distribution points.
With Ambani's Reliance Energy offering investments in piped gas supply in Tamil Nadu, the State should make use this opportunity to go for gas-based power plants. Though the environmental consideration has forced the State's hydel power schemes to take a back seat, maintaining an equilibrium in the hydel and thermal power ratio should augur well in energy management of Tamil Nadu, Mr Murari suggested.
