Nina Varghese

Chennai , Dec. 17

Shri Govindaraja Mills Ltd, part of the Jaya Vilas Group, has planned a Rs 350-crore expansion project.

Mr Ramkumar Varadaraj, Executive Director, Shri Govindaraja Mills Ltd, said that the company planned to add 25,000 spindles to the existing one lakh spindles at Shri Govindaraja Mills, located at Aruppukottai in southern Tamil Nadu. In addition to this, the company is planning a green field venture with one lakh spindles at Cuddapah in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr Varadaraj says that the new facility would come in at Cuddapah because of the lower cost of power and its proximity to both raw material and market.

The funding for the project would come mainly from banks under the Textile Upgradation Fund, he said.

The company recently won the India Manufacturing Excellence Award from Frost and Sullivan and an award from the Confederation of Indian Industry for the implementation of 5S. Mr Varadaraj says that the awards are the result of the initiatives made to improve the work culture and the quality of workplace.

Besides, implementing shop floor practices such as 5S and TPM, the company also roped in the services of the HR firm Grow Talent to formulate the shared vision statement (with the workers). These measures have served to check attrition rate at the mill, he said.

Grow Talent also introduced a "glad, sad or mad" exercise which helps employees express how they feel about the The company had achieved a turnover of Rs 120 crore last year and expects to do Rs 150 crore in the current year.
