Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 18

The Kerala Government is planning to have 5,000 rooms in the State under the `homestay' concept of the Tourism Department.

The Government has issued an order categorising the project, which will be implemented with the cooperation of the local people. The total investment in the project is estimated around Rs 75 crore.

Individuals or families owning houses with standard facilities can apply for being included in the project. There should be at least one room in the house that can be made available for stay of tourists. Also, a maximum of six rooms could be set aside for the purpose.

Besides, only the existing houses will be eligible under the scheme and at least one member of the family should be able to communicate in English. Those houses that are located in areas with tourism potential will be accorded priority for being included in the project, says the order. It is expected that about 7,500 people will get direct employment through the project.

Apart from providing affordable rooms to tourists, the project is expected to help foster cultural exchange.

It has been planned to create a cell under the Tourism Department to help investors. The cell will also give guidelines as also marketing assistance and technical inputs to the houses coming under the project.
