Tapping rural savings

This has reference to your editorial `Inclusion is more than an account' (Business Line, December 7) emphasising the need for banks to expand in un-banked rural areas to garner savings.

There are two main factors for the decline in savings: Increasing consumerism among the urbanites and low earnings of those in the rural areas. With much of the rural population still below poverty line, where is the scope for mobilising savings?

There is a need to improve the funds flow to the rural economy in order to increase the earnings potential of the rural population.

L. Rangarajan,

Vadodara
