With the Human Resources Development Ministry agreeing to sanction three more IITs in the country, the Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to allot about 600 acres in Medak district.
Informing the State Assembly of the Centre's decision for three more IITs during the XI Plan, Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said on Tuesday that the HRD Ministry had requested the State to identify and allot 500-600 acres free of cost at a place that has good physical and social infrastructure and road, rail and air connectivity.
The State has opted for Medak, the constituency once represented by the late Indira Gandhi. In fact, the Assembly had passed a resolution some years ago seeking the Centre's approval for locating an IIT in the temple town of Basara, on the banks of the Godavari river.
However, the HRD Ministry favoured Medak owing to its connectivity and infrastructure.
The State also proposes to start a 21st-century Gurukulam centre at Basara to train rural youth in information technology. The centre would award masters degree in IT.
Dr Reddy also announced that while the upcoming BITS centre near Hyderabad would be operational from the next academic year, there were attempts to set up a College of Architecture in Vijayawada.
