The aesthetically designed houses will have long metal legs, to be fixed in concrete pillars, and each house comprises 2 units.

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 19

Pre-fabricated houses for tsunami victims are being built at Gajuwaka near here by a Mumbai-based company, Unity Infraprojects Ltd. They are meant not for local use, but to be shipped to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the people there.

The work is going on in a 13-acre site at Gajuwaka and the project is worth Rs 250 crore.

The aesthetically designed houses will have long metal legs, to be fixed in concrete pillars, and each house comprises two units having a common metal staircase. The cost of each housing unit is Rs 6 lakh and each portion has a bedroom, a kitchen, a hall and a balcony.

STEEL AND WOOD

Structural steel, hard wood, bamboo, plywood and galvanised iron sheets are the materials that go into the making of the pre-fabricated houses. The floor, walls and roof are all made of wood.

Mr Anil Padhe, director of the company, said that 4,200 houses would be constructed during the first phase of the project, to be completed in a year.

"We are planning to ship 1,000 housing units or so, in a knocked-down condition, from the Vizag port once in three months. We have chosen Vizag to execute the work, as it is a major port. We are sourcing the material for pre-fabrication from Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata," he added.
