Chamber plea to President
Our Bureau
Coimbatore, Dec. 19
A delegation from the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, which met the President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, during the latter's visit here on Monday has highlighted some of the infrastructure problems faced by this industrial city and asked the President to recommend to the State and Central Governments to initiate action on them. On the current infrastructure bottlenecks facing Coimbatore, the delegation told the President that Tuticorin port was the convenient port for the businesses and industry in Coimbatore region. To facilitate speedier movement of goods from Coimbatore to Tuticorin, the existing metre gauge railway line between Coimbatore and Dindigul must be converted into broad gauge. Further, the track between Coimbatore and Tuticorin must be electrified. This will reduce port congestion at Chennai and also promote the development of southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The delegation led by its President, Mr D. Balasundaram, also highlighted the need for expanding the Coimbatore airport to handle increased cargo and passenger volumes and international air connectivity.
