New-vehicle owners "delight" with their vehicles has declined slightly for the first time in eight years, according to the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2006 India Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study SM released on Tuesday.
The annual study measures owners' delight with the design, features, layout and performance of their new vehicle. Seventeen of the 28 models included in the rankings declined as compared to the 2005 study, with the greatest declines occurring in the compact car and midsize car segments.
"With more vehicles on the roadways, rising pollution and adverse driving conditions, drivers are increasingly using air conditioning when operating their vehicle," said Mr Mohit Arora, India Director at J.D. Power Asia Pacific.
"This leads to higher sensitivity towards performance of the air conditioning system, thus, underperformance in this area leads to dissatisfaction. The problem is more severe in coastal cities such as Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata, as well as emerging cities such as Pune. With compact cars accounting for 50 per cent of passenger vehicles in India, manufacturers need to focus on providing enhanced HVAC performance to meet growing customer expectations."
Among vehicle segments, the recently launched Ford Fiesta leads the midsize car segment. The Honda City, Hyundai Accent and Maruti Baleno, respectively, closely follow the Fiesta in the midsize car rankings.
Honda Civic
The Honda Civic leads the premium midsize car segment.
Maruti Esteem
In the entry midsize car segment, the Maruti Esteem ranks highest, followed by the Ford Ikon.
For a second consecutive year, the Maruti Wagon R ranks highest in the compact car segment,
