Transmission of LS, RS channels to be made compulsory

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 19

The Government has proposed an amendment to the Section 8 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, to make it compulsory for every cable operator to re-transmit the Sansad Television Network Lok Sabha Channel and the Sansad Television Network Rajya Sabha Channel, which are independent of Doordarshan.

The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, introduced this amendment in the Lok Sabha to allow the Government to specify the name of the channels operated by or on behalf of Parliament. As per the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, every cable operator is required to re-transmit at least two Doordarshan terrestrial channels and one regional language channel of a State in the prime band in satellite mode on frequencies other than those carrying terrestrial frequencies.

The above-mentioned Parliamentary channels, which were allowed to be uplinked in December 2005, did not fall under Doordarshan's purview and thus did not come under the section 8 of the Act. The new amendment will henceforth provide a statuary provision for compulsory re-transmission of Parliamentary channels.
