Bombay Chamber moots integrated cargo movement

Our Bureau

Mumbai Dec. 20

The Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has suggested an integrated approach to domestic cargo movement by creating a separate ministry, called the Ministry of Inter-modal Cargo Transport and Logistics.

White Paper

In a White Paper on cargo movement in India, the BCCI has noted that the present multiplicity of ministries of transportation has made coordination of policies concerning inter-modal cargo movement difficult, costly and time consuming. This has also led to a serious dearth of inter-modal connectivity.

Consolidation

In the light of this, the chamber recommended that various departments, under different ministries, handling cargo movement should be consolidated under a single ministry.

"The Ministry should be responsible for the entire movement of cargo by any mode of transport, facilitating inter-modal logistics," the chamber said.

The BCCI has also suggested creation of a unified cargo information base, providing data on origin and destination of cargo and inter-modal movement of cargo, which should be available on a common Web across all ports, ICDs, airports, railway terminals and warehouses.
