Centre urged to fix ceiling for small units

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Dec. 20

Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) has urged the Union Government to fix a ceiling on sales turnover along with ceiling on investments while defining SSIs. In a memorandum submitted to the Minister for Small Scale Industries, Mr Mahavir Prasad, by a team led by the Maditssia President, Mr P.T. Krishnamoorthy, it has been said that fixing of an investment ceiling on machinery at Rs 5 crore in the new policy for SSIs would enable big units with a total investment of Rs 20 crore, inclusive of land and working capital and sales turnover of Rs 100 crore, to claim the benefits extended to SSIs. To protect small units, it is necessary that a ceiling on sales turnover also be fixed along with a ceiling on investments in machinery, as has been done in western countries, the association said. Industry associations must be empowered to play their due role effectively by being given more powers and the Government should fund them, it added.
