Tenders for coal-based power plants soon

The Governments of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Maharashtra will issue tenders in a few weeks' time to select potential project developers for coal-based power plants with capacities of between 1,000 MW and 1,500 MW.
The tenders will be awarded on the basis of competitive bidding on tariff, said Mr R.V. Shahi, Union Power Secretary.
He was talking to presspersons on the sidelines of the Inter Institutional Group meeting. The group comprises senior executives of leading banks and officials from Union Power Ministry; and has been specially established to facilitate the financial closure of over 16 private sector power plants.
Mr Shahi said that the decision regarding new plants was taken at a meeting of power secretaries of all the State Governments on Wednesday.
The Power Ministry will facilitate coal linkages and environmental clearances for all these power plants. The project cost for these plants would be more than Rs 4,000 crore each, he said.
Mr Shahi also said that a number of `Merchant power plants' with a collective capacity of 15,000 MW are likely to come up in the next three years.
The Inter Institutional Group will facilitate in setting up of these plants, he said.
The Merchant power plants are exclusively floated for power trading and power supply to industrial consumers.
