TN distributes 18,000 tonnes certified paddy seeds

The agriculture department in Tamil Nadu is producing and distributing 18,000 tonnes of certified paddy seeds, 1,600 tonnes of pulses seeds, 450 tonnes of millet seeds, 4,500 tonnes of oilseeds and 250 tonnes of cottonseeds.

Disclosing this at a national conference on Seed Quality Control held at the Tamilnadu Agricultural University here on Thursday, the Director, Seed Certification, Mr K Ragunathan, said the average rice productivity in Tamil Nadu, which stood at 805 kg per hectare in 1921 and 1,912 kg in 1970-71, rose to 3,115 kg in 1991-92 and the average productivity of rice in the State had now touched 3,600 kg per hectare.

The agri department has followed a seed replacement rate of 17 per cent in the case of paddy, 8 per cent for millets, 12.5 per cent for pulses, 15 per cent for gingelly and 15 per cent for cotton, he said.
