Kochi Port union seeks allowance

Our Bureau

Kochi , Dec. 21

The Cochin Thuramugha Thozilali Union, one of the trade unions in the Kochi Port, has requested the port Chairman to initiate steps to extend the deputation allowance to the employees of the port currently serving in India Gateway Terminal on `transfer on deputation' basis with retrospective effecting from April 2005.

The joint secretary of the Union, Mr K.N. Vasudevan, in a statement issued here said that the port was collecting the leave salary and pensionary contribution every month from the IGT for all the employees transferred to them.

However, the workers alone were not paid the deputation allowance when the rules in this regard were clear in the matter.

The allowance is an integral part of deputation and the person on deputation is entitled to draw the allowance depending on the scale of pay he opted for and at the rate specified for the station posted on deputation.

Though the clause of settlement were generally protecting the wages and service conditions of the employees of the port at the container terminal, he said that the decision not to allow deputation allowance was intriguing, compromising and not in consonance with the relevant Government rules on this matter.
