Bhubaneswar , Dec. 21

The Orissa Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) for establishing market linkages for several agricultural produce grown in the State.

The MoU was signed by the Co-operation Department Secretary, Ms Madhur Sarangi, and the NAFED Managing Director, Mr Rajiv Ranjan, in the presence of the Chief Minister of Orissa, Mr Naveen Patnaik; the Minister of State for Co-operation, Ms Surama Padhi; and the State Chief Secretary, Mr Ajit Kumar Tripathy.

Contract Farming

The MoU provides that NAFED will escalate its commercial activities in the State for procurement of groundnut, maize, onion, sunflower, sesamum and non-basmati aromatic varieties of rice.

NAFED will also take up contract farming for production of oilseeds such as groundnut, maize and other cereals, pulses, vegetables and spices.

The move will also facilitate crop diversification, ensure supply of quality seeds to farmers, facilitate value addition through agri-processing and strengthen existing agricultural marketing infrastructure.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Patnaik said that all legal hurdles for development of supply chains and market linkages had been removed by his Government through the amendments to the Orissa Agricultural Produce Markets Act.

Mr Patnaik said his Government would carry out other reforms that maybe necessary for taking the State's agriculture to the market making it nationally and globally competitive.
