The Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, Mr V. Thulasidas, will continue at the helm of the airline for some more time.

"Mr Thulasidas has been given an extension and will continue in his present post till further order. We require him for the proposed merger," the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, told newspersons.

Mr Thulasidas was Chief Secretary, Tripura, before assuming charge as CMD of Air India in December 2003 for a period of three years. However, with the merger of Air India and Indian at a crucial stage, the Government has decided to extend the tenure of Mr Thulasidas.

During the tenure of Mr Thulasidas not only did Air India order 68 new Boeing aircraft valued at more than Rs 30,000 crore but also received the first of these aircraft earlier this month.

The airline has also drawn up plans for expanding its global network including operating non-stop flights between India and the US after the delivery of new aircraft starts.
