Panaji , Dec 22 The Director of the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), Mr P.F.X. D'Lima, has predicted a boom in manufacturing based on the changing pattern witnessed at the placements of the latest batch this year, and a comparative plateauing of services sector in next five years in terms of job opportunities in the country. Speaking to newspersons at the GIM premises, he said: "It is our impression that India would not lag behind China in terms of manufacturing and as such, a lot of quality precision jobs in sectors like automotive and components would be coming to India. B-schools better be prepared for this changing trend." On the latest placement, Mr Anirban Sengupta, Associate Professor (Marketing) and Placement Co-ordinator, said that GIM had witnessed an increase of 22.13 per cent in the average salary. What was new was the focus on manufacturing as well apart from the IT and the financial sector compared to last year. The annual average salary of the students passing out from the GIM has shown a rise from Rs 5.24 lakh to Rs 6.41 lakh this year. The highest annual salary offered to the students was Rs 9 lakh, against Rs 8 lakh last year. The median salary this year was Rs 6.5 lakh, with the least salary offered being Rs 4 lakh. Altogether, 193 offers were made this year, with the IT sector being the largest recruiter. Infosys, CTS and IBM made 25, 24 and 11 offers respectively, making them the largest recruiters. Some of the first time recruiters this year were Accenture, Deloitte, Idea Cellular, HP, HSBC Bank, Hutch, Madura Garments and Tata Motors. The GIM management is thinking of focusing on teaching in non-traditional areas such as manufacture and automotive component sectors, he added.
