Chennai , Dec. 22

Showcasing rubber machinery, automotive components and plantation sectors will be among the focus areas of International Rubber Expo 2007 to be held here from January 17 to 20.

Improving labour productivity and efficiency of rubber manufacturers would also feature in the exhibition-cum-conference to be held at the Chennai Trade Centre, according to Mr Anil Sampat, Chairman of the event, being organised by the All-India Rubber Industries Association.

Business worth $500 million is likely to be transacted during the event, says a press release.

Mr Sampat said the country's rubber production was around 800,000 tonnes a year and growing at 25-30 per cent. The rubber industry, including tyre manufacturing, is valued at annually around Rs 25,000 crore and of this Rs 4,000 crore was exports, he told newspersons.

There would be around 250 exhibitors in the expo and about 10,000 visitors, including 1,500 from abroad, would attend the show to buy, sell and have joint ventures across different sectors of manufacturing, machinery and plantation. Visitors are expected from countries such as the US, Thailand, Tunisia, China and Turkey, he said.

Mr Sampat said the growth of the rubber industry was fuelled by the spurt in the manufacturing of automobiles. With 45 per cent of rubber being used in tyres and another 15-20 per cent in channels, wipers, door beading and under the hood rubber parts, the automobile industry is boosting the rubber industry, he said.
