The Hindu Business Line : Jindal Steel Works to set up in West Bengal

A 10-million tonne capacity integrated steel plant is to be set up by Jindal Steel Works at Salboni in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, according to Mr Sajjan Jindal, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Jindal Steel works.

Speaking to reporters after paying a "courtesy visit" to Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, here on Friday, Mr Jindal said that the plant, which will be set up at an investment of Rs 10,000 crore, would be the largest of its kind in the country. The memorandum of agreement to this effect will be signed on January 11 at Kolkata between the West Bengal Government and the Jindal group.

Most of the 5,000 acres required to set up the plant is going to be vested land, Mr Jindal said, adding that availability of land was the responsibility of the State Government. When asked about the controversy regarding the acquisition of farmland for industrialisation in the proposed Tata car factory at Singur, Mr Jindal said that the Singur issue "would not affect our project at all."

"The Singur issue should not have a negative impact on the overall industrialisation in the state," Mr Jindal said, adding that barring the Singur issue, the industrial situation in the State was excellent. "It is the most forward looking State and the best investment destination in India," he added.

The plant, which in the initial phase will have a capacity of three million tonnes, will acquire coal from the local mines while iron ore will be bought from the market. "We might also have to import iron ore," he added. It will include a blast furnace and steel manufacturing units, besides a 600 MW captive power plant.

The project, which will take around 36 months to complete, is expected to employ around 10,000 people in direct as well as indirect capacity. Construction work is expected to start before monsoon next year.

Mr Jindal also said that all issues regarding the local population will be taken care of and rehabilitation package offered to those whose land might be affected. "The Jindal Group has always followed the policy of carrying on social activity alongside our industrial activity," he said.
