Exports & Imports States - Tamil Nadu `TN agri commodities enjoy potential in SE Asia' G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , Dec. 24 Food and vegetable exporters from Tamil Nadu can exploit the export market potential in three neighbourhood countries - Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand - which have considerable population of people of Tamil-origin living there. An analysis made by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's domestic and export market intelligence cell, has revealed that rice, cereals and ethnic vegetables traditionally grown from Tamil Nadu could be exported to these destinations. The factors favourable are the prevailing price trends of agri products in these countries, the general taste and preferences of the Indian/Tamilian origin. The study also covered aspects such as the prevailing import duty structure, transportation costs etc., according to a press release from the TNAU.
Potential items
The Cell has recommended Ponni rice, Idli rice, red/black/green gram, vegetables such as carrot, broccoli, bhendi, radish, morigna, brinjal curry leaves, yam and small onions could be exported. Similarly, pomegranate, sapota, grapes, mango, red fleshed guava, red banana have huge export potential in Malaysia. In addition to the cereals and vegetables, other agri commodities such as tamarind, red chillies, betel leaf, flowers such as crossendra, jasmine, tube rose, nerium, thulasi and origanum, ghee, all edible oils, honey, dried fruits and vegetables, papads, fried dhals, toffees made from groundnut and gingelly, peanut, popped rice and all grocery items too can be exported to Singapore. The TNAU release further added that importers of agri products in these countries complain that while export samples received from shippers were found to be good, the actual shipments of products failed to conform to the samples sent. The gradual fall in the quality of the subsequent shipments has also been reported.
