Sugar States - Tamil Nadu Let sugar mills bear cost of transporting cane: Growers Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec. 25 Sugarcane growers have represented to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, to order private sugar mills to bear the cost of transporting sugarcane from farms to the mills. According to a press release from the Sugar Cane Growers Farmers Welfare Association, private sugar mills should transport the sugarcane at their own cost like the cooperative sugar mills in line with the State Government's orders for the current season. Earlier, farmers paid for the cost of transporting sugarcane up to a distance of 10 km. The mills had to bear the transportation cost for distances greater than 10 km. Recently, the State Government announced that the sugar mills had to pay the entire cost of sugarcane transportation. But the private mills have declined saying that the order does not bind them, according to the release. The association has said that only the farmers supplying sugarcane to cooperative sector sugar mills are benefited. But over six lakh farmers supplying cane to the private sector mills are at a disadvantage.
