The Hindu Business Line : Mahindra group's theatre awards

Speaking to Business Line here, Mr Ravi Dubey, Consultant Creative Director, META, said this year the event is expanding to include plays from regional and tribal languages, street theatre, multimedia, puppetry and dance and even non-verbal presentations.

The awards are given in two streams - Emerging Theatre and Established Theatre. The Mahindra group is bearing the entire cost of the sponsorship.

The prizes will include statuettes and cash - Rs 35,000 for individual awards, Rs 75,000 for the best original playwright and Rs 1 lakh for the best production. KPMG will audit the process of selection, nomination and judging of the final winners. Ten winners will be shortlisted and their plays will be put for the judges in March in Delhi. Mr Dubey said he expected around 50-75 applications to come in. The shortlist will be made on the basis of DVD recordings of the play/performance. In some cases, META will fund a group if it cannot afford to make a DVD recording, he added. Information can be found on www.metawards.com. The judges include actor and Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, Sharmila Tagore, danseuse Anita Ratnam and actor Neena Gupta. Last year, only English and Hindi plays were put up.
