Efforts taken to woo US, Japanese cos to chemicals hub

Kolkata , Dec. 26

Announcing the creation of petrochemicals/chemicals and plastics hubs in West Bengal, the Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said that the Salim Group of Indonesia will promote this project, with IOC as the anchor investor.

The chemicals hub is coming up at Haldia.

Addressing captains of industry at the open session of BCCI's general meeting here, he said efforts have been taken to attract many large US and Japanese companies to the proposed chemicals hub.

He said some 700 acres have been earmarked for the plastics hub at Midnapore.

A BCCI study team, mandated by the Bengal Government to prepare the feasibility report for this project, is expected to submit its report soon.

Pointing out that the agro-based products sector was receiving high priority, Mr Bhattacharjee stated that some German and French companies were already showing interest.

Besides the eco-tourism project in the Sunderbans area, for which an international consultant has already been appointed, and Tea Tourism in North Bengal, some of the other projects the Chief Minster listed pertained to R&D in biotechnology, in collaboration with IIT, Kharagpur and Berkley University and the proposed centrally funded deep sea port near the eastern part of Bay of Bengal (about 25 km away from Sagar Island).

He said Consulting Engineering Services was already preparing a project report for another modern greenfield international airport about 35 km away from Kolkata.

Besides this, the State Government was examining a preliminary report prepared by a Delhi-based consultancy group for a Bus Rapid Transit System for Kolkata city.
