Rupee gains 11 paise

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Dec. 26

The rupee gained against the dollar driven by a liquidity crunch. The domestic currency opened at 44.58/60 and closed the day at 44.45, up from Friday's 44.56/57. Dealers said the shortage of cash in the system caused the rupee to appreciate. "Banks were selling dollars to generate the rupee, which prompted the domestic currency to gain by 11 paise," said a dealer at a private bank. The US and European markets were shut on Tuesday. In forwards, the 6-month closed at 4.67 per cent (3.69 per cent) and the 12-month ended at 3.64 per cent (3 per cent).
