More bank holidays next year

Our Bureau

Chennai , Dec. 26

In 2007, banks will be closed for 24 days as holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act instead of 17 as announced earlier in Tamil Nadu.

According to an official press release, the State Government received representations from bank employees' associations seeking more holidays. They had pointed out that other State Governments such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Kerala and Orissa have declared more than 17 holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, which covers commercial banks and co-operative banks.

The holidays under the Act are based on guidelines of the Central Government and the Reserve Bank.

Also, the Chief Gazi to the Government of Tamil Nadu had requested that a holiday may be declared on `Bakrid,' which will be celebrated on January 1, 2007, in Tamil Nadu, the release said.

The State Government has amended its earlier order dated November 16, 2006, and has declared 24 public holidays in 2007, including January 1, under the Negotiable Instruments Act covering commercial banks and co-operative banks.

The earlier order had also declared 22 holidays for State Government offices.

In 2006, both banks and State Government offices had 17 holidays.
