Gateway ties up with Sastra to train teachers

Four modules will be covered under the programme — change management, crisis management, handling conflicts and handling difficult people.

Chennai , Dec. 27

Gateway Human Resources, a Chennai-based training and recruitment unit of Eyelight Events and Promotions (India), has tied up with the Thanjavur-based Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) for training teachers.

The company also plans to train students and act as a consultant for recruitment.

According to Mr N. Swaminaathan, Chief Consultant, Gateway HR, teachers need to upgrade their communication skills to suit the changing syllabi.

"While colleges today have modules on communication and presentation skills for students, there is no such training programme for teachers," he said.

Gateway's one-year tie-up with SASTRA will involve about 160 teachers including those with M.E. and Ph.D. qualifications. Four modules will be covered under the training programme — change management, crisis management, handling conflicts and handling difficult people.

Issues such as ego clashes with students (if a student through placement gets higher salary than his teacher), unwillingness to take responsibility for completing portions of one's subject and coping with new curricula would also be discussed in the programme.

The programme will be held on weekends so that regular lectures are not affected.

Gateway conducted a similar programme at K.S.R. College of Technology, Tiruchengode. "We plan to tie-up with at least 12 colleges and deemed universities in the academic year 2007-08," said Mr Swaminaathan.

Other institutes

The company is in talks with institutes such as Coimbatore Institute of Technology, P.S.G.R. Krishnammal College for Women and the Erode-based Vivekananda Educational Institutions to train teachers.

The company is also looking at coaching students from these colleges on soft skills to make them more suitable for employment.

It would also play the role of a placement consultant and facilitate recruitment in areas such as banking (for finance and marketing related jobs) and engineering (for mechanical, electrical and electronics related jobs).
