New Delhi , Dec. 27 The Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora, on Wednesday appealed to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, seeking his immediate intervention for reducing sales tax on petrol and diesel which would lessen the burden of high prices on the consumers. The petroleum dealers have gone on strike against the huge difference between the rates of sales tax on the two products in the State vis-à-vis the rates prevailing in the neighbouring State. In a letter to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr Deora cited the initiative taken by the Central Government by reducing the retail selling price of petrol by Rs 2 per litre and diesel by Re 1 per litre in order to reduce the burden on the consumers. The Petroleum Minister has also mentioned in his letter that the sales tax on petrol in Delhi is 20 per cent and on diesel 12.5 per cent while the corresponding figures in Uttar Pradesh are 25 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively.
He also appealed to the agitating dealers in the State to immediately call off their strike as he has already taken up the matter with the Chief Minister. Mr Deora said that the strike has put the consumers to uncalled for hardships.
