Vietnamese pepper output likely to fall next year

Kochi , Dec. 27

Pepper production in Vietnam is projected to be less by 10 per cent this year and in 2007, according to a latest report.

A good number of pepper vines have been destroyed by pests and diseases in several plantations in the growing regions of the country and as a result the output would face a fall in 2006 and 2007, the report quoting local industry sources said.

As against 1.35 lakh tonnes in 2005, the production in 2006 would be around 1.2 lakh tonnes and the output next year is likely to be further less by 10 per cent of the current production, it said.

Lower exports

During January - November this year, Vietnam reported to have exported 1.17 lakh tonnes of pepper, which was 2.1 per cent lower than that of the previous year, it said.

Vietnam a new entrant to pepper cultivation has become the world's top producer of the commodity in recent years pushing India to the second slot and breaking the latter's monopoly. It used to export raw pepper but of late has started processing it with the support of multinationals, including Indian companies, which have set up processing units there.

It has about 52,500 hectares under pepper with an average of yield of 2,300 kg a hectare. Where as, the Indian pepper output dwindles between 55,000 - 70,000 tonnes from an estimated total area of about 2.24 lakh hectares with an average yield of 350 kg a hectare.
