Plea to stop levying cess on farm goods

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Dec. 28

The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, to direct the Market Committee from levying cess on agricultural goods.

In a statement here, the Chamber Secretary, Mr P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, said most of the time agriculturists sell their produce to traders in adjustment against loans taken from them earlier though they only quote the price for their commodities depending on the market situation. Less than marginal sale takes place for cash. Many do not carry their produce to the Market Committee to sell them.
