Record number of passports issued

The Passport Office at Tiruchi, having jurisdiction over 16 central and southern revenue districts, has issued a record number of three lakh passports during the calendar year 2006, marking its best performance.The previous best was in 2004 when it issued 2.59 lakh passports. Last year, the office issued 2.18 lakh passports. The revenue of the Tiruchi Passport Office too touched a new high this year with Rs 30 crore. This was compared to the revenue of Rs 27 crore it fetched in 2005 and Rs 26 crore in the previous year,the Passport Officer, Mr K.S. Daulat Thameem, told presspersons here.Referring to the District Passports Cells (DPCs) functioning in the 16 district Collectorates, Mr Thameem said a total of 76,000 applications were received through the DPCs this year and about 88,000 passports were issued (including the backlog of previous year's applications). Mr Thameem said 15,000 passports were issued under the `tatkal' scheme this year, compared to 14,400 last year.
