`The groups have done a turnover of around Rs 140 crore'

Their profit stood at Rs 12.82 crore at the end of March 31, 2006.

Mangalore , Dec. 31

After achieving success in their activities, it is now time for self-help groups (SHGs) — promoted by Dakshina Kannada-based non-governmental organisation Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) — to enjoy the fruits of their hard work.

As many as 9,255 SHGs promoted by the organisation have now decided to share 50 per cent of the profit earned by them among themselves. The Executive Director of SKDRDP, Dr L.H. Manjunath, told Business Line that 9,255 SHGs, which have been in existence for the past five years, have done a turnover of around Rs 140 crore.

Their profit stood at Rs 12.82 crore at the end of March 31, 2006.

These SHGs have decided to disburse 50 per cent of the profit earned by them (Rs 6.31 crore) among themselves. Based on the performance of SHGs concerned, these members would get between Rs 2,000 and Rs 8,000.

The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, would disburse the amount to the SHG members at a function in Dharmasthala on January 3, he said.

Dr Manjunath hoped that all the 43,000 SKDRDP-promoted SHGs would strive for getting dividends in the coming years.

Of these 43,000 , groups of farmers with small holdings constitute around 14,000.

In all, 4.23 lakh families are involved in the SHG movement. The organisation operates in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.
