Mangalore , Dec. 31

The Karnataka Government is planning a separate package for the development of coastal tourism.

Addressing presspersons at Pilikula Nisarga Dhama - a nature park near here — the Karnataka Tourism Minister, Mr B. Sreeramulu, said that a proposal has been sent to the Union Government to release Rs 8 crore for development of coastal tourism. There are also plans to popularise coastal tourism package through FM radio stations in Bangalore and nearby areas.

The State Government had allocated Rs 60 crore for the development of tourism in the State. The Uniopnl Government was requested to allocate Rs 170 crore in the Budget for tourism development in the State.

The poor condition of approach roads leading to major tourist destinations was affecting tourism development in such centres, he added. The State Government had allocated Rs 50 crore to repair the roads.

The Government plans to introduce luxury trains on the lines of `Palace-on-wheels' in Rajasthan and Maharashtra. These trains, likely to be introduced in February, would help tap the tourism potential of northern Karnataka.

He said that Rs 95 lakh would be released for the development of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama. Of this, Rs 45 lakh would be used for the completion of heritage village project and Rs 50 lakh for the development of wildlife at the park, he added.
