Softening trend

RISING ACREAGE: Farm workers removing weeds from a field on which black matpe (urad) is being cultivated in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Prices of black matpe, which increased to over Rs Rs 4,000 a quintal in November, have begun to soften on hopes of better crop in rain-fed and irrigated areas. Currently, it is quoted at Rs 2,973 a quintal on NCDEX for January delivery and Rs 2,664 for March delivery. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, area under black matpe during the current rabi season has increased to 5.42 lakh hectares from 5.19 lakh hectares during the same period in the last two years.
