To connect New Delhi station and Indira Gandhi International Airport
New Delhi , Jan. 1 The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids from firms to design, supply, install, commission and operate all systems for the 19-km metro link that is to connect New Delhi city centre to international airport. The civil works for the project would be handled by DMRC. The entire project is estimated to cost Rs 3,500-3,800 crore. The link between the New Delhi station and the Indira Gandhi International Airport will be about 19 km long and comprise underground and elevated sections. There will be intermediate stations at Shivaji Stadium and Moti Bagh. Trains will cover the entire distance in 16 minutes and check-in facilities will be available at New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium and Moti Bagh stations.
Concessionaire's role
The concessionaire engaged will be responsible for installation of all systems including rolling stock, over head electrification, track, signalling and telecommunication, ventilation and air-conditioning, automatic fare collection, baggage check-in and handling, depot and other facilities and for commissioning and operating the system for 30 years including construction time, according to a DMRC statement. The design and construction of the basic civil structure will be done by DMRC and these will then be made available to the concessionaire, it added.
Expression of interest
The expression of interest documents will go on sale from January 10. The concessionaire firm or one of the consortium members should have executed at least one such project or operated and maintained such a project or should have been a major supplier of equipment for a rail-based transit system which was successfully implemented. DMRC will also shortlist, through global pre-qualification, tunnelling contractors of international repute for the underground works of the airport express link. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the promoters modernising the Delhi airport, have agreed to provide Rs 350 crore towards the extension of the metro rail project from the city centre to the airport. In early December 2006, the DIAL Managing Director, Mr Srinivas Bommidala, had stated that the company had agreed to provide ten per cent of the total cost of the project. "The project is estimated to cost about Rs 3,500-Rs 3,800 crore. We are committed to provide about Rs 350 crore for the project, which will run on the New Delhi-Moti Bagh-airport route,'' he had said.
